“My Mistakes From My First Development”

Domain Development, Personal

Hi Everyone !
My first domain development was in early 2008, i decided to make a mini-site on a celebrity from the sport sector.
The domain registered under my Go Daddy account, so i was checking some options to create the mini-site with Go Daddy.
I discovered a Go Daddy service called “website tonight”, so i decided to develop the site using this service.
I did a lot of mistakes and this is exactly what i want to share with you.
Mistake #1 – I paid $300 for a costume design work by Go Daddy. (too much money for logo+design)
Mistake #2 – I took all the content from Wikipedia. (copyright rules, this is not unique content)
Mistake #3 – I also bought Go Daddy services Traffic-Blazer + Traffic Facts. (you can get it for free)
Mistake #4 – I used a celebrity domain name for the site. (cybersquatting issue)
Mistake #5 – I open AdWords account and spend over $400 on advertising. (Not required for a new site).
Mistake #6 – When someone interested in advertising on my site i told him, i do not want to publish any banners on the site. (i didn’t know how much to ask for or how to locate the banner on my site)
Mistake #7 – I was paying $80 a month for the custom Go Daddy design until i close the site 7 months after launch. (This is a lot of money for a service like that)
This is my mistakes from my first development.
What Mistakes You Did?
You are more than welcome to share it, in the comments section below.
BTW – Tia Wood from (TiaWood.com) and I will be doing a great contest with a huge domain+development prize…”Details Coming Soon“.

Excellent top Arbel …
” The smart man learns from his mistakes.
The wise man learns from the mistakes of others. ”
I have made ALOT of mistakes and still do everyday.
Here are a few early mistakes I made.
1. developed first site on a .net without securing the .com … notice that many others haven’t learned this mistake yet even though today we have more information on why this is wrong.
2. underestimated development costs on 1 site (lost over $20,000 + development headaches and time lost) … adding desired features that were not required features
3. building too many minisites … yes you can make alot of money with them (affiliate programs) but the more sites you have, the less focus and can easily lose control
4. focused too much on non English markets figuring I would be the big fish in the small pond (not in this case) … there were few ” honest ” affiliate programs in the English market … and even fewer in some foreign markets !
5. pored too much money from profitable sites to those that
had the promise of being profitable.
I could go on and on and on but I want to spend time
making and learning from others my future mistakes now
Hope this helps.

Funny thing…I was just discussing this topic with one of my partners last week.
My very first website was for an sci-fi eBook series that I was writing about vampires vs werewolves. I had the story fleshed out, to be released by chapter, and I had all the backend stuff pretty well figured out. But what killed the project (at that time
) was how I developed the entire site in flash. I didn’t have deep enough pockets for advertising and was oblivious to SEO, so while the site looked pretty and worked, I had little traffic!
When I got my bachelor’s in computer graphics/interactive media, I knew how to make a site look good and the developing came easy, but they never taught anything about the importance of SEO…so my big lesson learned – make your site SEO-friendly to get that organic traffic that you don’t have to directly pay for! (And it didn’t help that it was on a .NET…lol)
No matter how great your site is or its content/product/services, if nobody is seeing it, it will disappear into the http://www.blackhole.com.
